The state of North Carolina is investigating a potential conflict of interest involving Democratic senator Kay Hagan. Fox 46 in Charlotte reports:
“At question is the more than $250,000 in grant money received by a company co-owned by Hagan’s husband back in 2010,” says the anchor. “In a memo released Saturday night, the state Department of Environmental and Natural resources stated stimulus grants awarded to JDC Manufacturing, the company that Hagan’s husband owns, had been referred to the state auditor for further legal review.”
The potential conflict of interest was first reported last month by the Carolina Journal, a publication of the Raleigh-based conservative John Locke Foundation. National Review Online‘s Joel Gerhke reported over the weekend that the Charlotte Observer had pulled its online story about Hagan’s conflict of interest.
“The people of this state deserve the truth – and they deserve it before the election on Tuesday,” Pope said. “If the Observer hid this news story because it was inaccurate, they ought to tell us. If they hid it to protect Senator Hagan, or because they feared the truth, they ought to apologize for misleading the people of North Carolina.”
Hagan is in a close race for reelection against Republican challenger Thom Tillis.
