Tyre Sampson weighed 96 pounds over the maximum passenger weight of 287 pounds for the Free Fall attraction at ICON Park and died from blunt force trauma, according to an autopsy conducted by the Orange County Medical Examiner, obtained by FOX35 Orlando.
SEAT WAS LOCKED ON RIDE INVOLVED IN FLORIDA TEENAGER’S DEATH
Sampson’s manner of death was classified as an accident, according to the outlet. The teenager was visiting Orlando from Missouri when he fell roughly 430 feet from the ride.
“He was 387 pounds, and that’s 97 pounds more than what the maximum requirement was. So he never should have been on that ride. He should have been able to attend his eighth-grade graduation last week,” Kim Wald, an attorney with the Haggard Law Firm representing Sampson’s family, told the outlet. “This is just one more piece of the puzzle moving forward for us in the case.”
The autopsy report comes after a state investigation found that manual adjustments to Sampson’s seat could have led safety lights to illuminate improperly, though Sampson was never “properly secured in the seat,” Nikki Fried, the commissioner of the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, said in a press conference in April.
Sampson’s parents have since filed a wrongful death lawsuit against ICON Park, the Slingshot Group, the manufacturer of the ride, and the construction company that built it.
