Trump’s popularity and engagement on social media tanks

Former President Donald Trump’s popularity and following online has dropped significantly, and his new heavily promoted blog isn’t getting much attention, according to data from online analytics firms.

Trump’s new “From the Desk of Donald Trump” blog, which he created after being banned from most major social media platforms, has been heavily pushed by Trump and his team over the past few weeks. But the website has not been shared with the same fervor his tweets once were.

The blog has been shared on average less than 2,000 times a day, according to data from the social media analytics firm BuzzSumo and the Facebook-owned content-tracking tool CrowdTangle.

Furthermore, Trump’s social media engagement in terms of likes, comments, reactions, and shares on Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, and Pinterest has plummeted 95% since the beginning of the year, marking his lowest online popularity since 2016, according to a Washington Post review of data from four online-analytics firms.

However, Trump claims his new blog has been viewed by tens of millions of people in the past month, even if the website’s links are not being shared on social media platforms.

“The very basic site we have to post our statements has received 36.7 million views over the past month alone, and we’re getting more traffic to our website now than in 2020, an Election year!” Trump said in a statement Monday evening.

TRUMP BAN UPHELD BY FACEBOOK’S INDEPENDENT OVERSIGHT BOARD

Social media giants such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube banned Trump from their platforms following the Jan. 6 Capitol riot that saw at least five deaths as thousands of people clashed with police. All three companies have gone on to extend Trump’s bans indefinitely.

Prior to the ban, Trump’s Facebook page attracted millions of shares, comments, and other online interactions every week, and his posts on Twitter often received hundreds of thousands of retweets.

Two people close to Trump told the Washington Examiner earlier this month he would face significant political challenges if he is unable to send his messages out on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube — especially if he can’t find a new, worthwhile social media platform to engage directly with followers and find new campaign donors.

Trump and his team have indicated he will likely return to using social media in a few weeks with a new platform of his own. Trump confirmed in his statement Monday he would “soon” decide whether to join an existing platform of his choice or establish a new one altogether.
