A newly released video from the U.S. Navy shows footage from an incident that involved six unidentified drones flying over the USS Zumwalt, the Navy’s most advanced surface combatant.

The footage was recorded around 17 nautical miles from the California Marine Corps base at Camp Pendleton in April 2019. The ship reported the unmanned aerial systems (UAS) were seen operating in close proximity to the ship at altitudes ranging from 300 to 1000 feet, and the UAS crossed over the ship’s deck at one point, according to the War Zone.

“I’m unable to determine much of the configuration of the aircraft,” said David Kovar, the CEO of URSA Inc., which specializes in drone security. “It appears to have four regularly spaced running, or navigation lights.”

An unidentified drone analyst stated he did not see anything on the drone that made him think it could be purchased by the general public. Because the drones were flying 17 miles off the coast of Southern California, he believes the drones were “likely launched from a boat and that this was likely a planned ‘mission’ because no one has 6 drones on a boat for recreational purposes,” he told the outlet.

The analyst concluded that the only way to determine the origin and capabilities of the drone would be to capture it.

The incident from April 2019 is one of several involving drones and Navy vessels that took place throughout the year, with most taking place in July, according to the outlet.

Construction of the USS Zumwalt began in February 2009, with the ship launching almost five years later in October 2013. The ship is designed to be both a powerful force to be reckoned with while also being stealthy, according to Navy magazine All Hands.
