In an aggressive move to back up its support for President-elect Trump, the National Rifle Association on Tuesday vowed to take out Democrats and others trying to “sabotage his administration.”
Taking credit for pushing Trump over the finish line, NRA Executive Vice President and CEO Wayne LaPierre said that his group would do what it takes to fight gun control advocates such as former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and those trying to thwart the incoming president.
In a video for NRA TV, he said, “Make no mistake: This election was a grassroots rejection of the elite class that wants to rule America. And the only organization that has fought that fight without apology is the National Rifle Association of America. But the time for celebration is over. Our moment to make history begins now.”
His rallying cry to members and gun rights supporters comes at a time when some might have expected the NRA to lay low and enjoy Trump’s win in a campaign they were among the first to back.
But LaPierre said he wants to help Trump overcome his opponents in Washington and keep the mainstream media and political elites on their heels.
“Already, the forces that conspired to keep Donald Trump out of the White House are coming together to sabotage his administration. And they will spend whatever it takes to cripple his plans and inflict their revenge,” said LaPierre.
“Donald Trump will need every ounce of energy we can muster and he has no more powerful ally than the NRA,” he said, adding, “Our time is now. This is our historic moment to go on offense and restore American greatness.”
He called the NRA Trump’s “strongest ally,” and urged supporters to promote the Twitter hashtag #OurTimeisNow.
