Liberal Media Scream: Biographer Meacham says Trump puts America on trial

This week’s Liberal Media Scream features prize-winning presidential biographer and former Newsweek editor Jon Meacham decrying a President Trump-led America that he claimed flows with “xenophobia, extremism, racism, nativism, isolationism.”

He appeared Sunday on CBS’s Face the Nation on a panel of book authors. He suggested that the “flow” under Trump needs to “ebb.”

On the show, he said:

“Now we face this wildly unconventional president who is actively and overtly putting all the norms, that so many of us were accustomed to, on trial. And so, we have these forces in American life that are perennial: xenophobia, extremism, racism, nativism, isolationism. They ebb and they flow in American life, they always have. And right now they’re flowing. The task of the country is to get them to ebb.”

Brent Baker, Media Research Center vice president of research, explains our weekly pick: “Instead of seeing the best in an America which elected Donald Trump in an effort to preserve the values which made the nation so great, Meacham only sees the U.S. through a negative prism. Those traits he cited all exist, but they are the exception which proves the larger rule, but which Meacham, like many journalists, is too narrowly focused to see.”

Rating: Three out of five screams.
