Just a day before President Trump makes his record seventh trip to West Virginia, a new poll shows big support to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court next week, and pressure on Sen. Joe Manchin to back him.
The survey showed that 58 percent of West Virginia voters want Kavanaugh confirmed. Just 28 percent said no.
What’s more, 59 percent of independent voters and women, by a margin of 52 percent to 35 percent, want the embattled federal appeals court judge elevated to the top court in the land.
And West Virginia voters found Kavanaugh far more credible than his accuser, Christine Blasey Ford.
Manchin has been on the fence on Kavanaugh and Trump is expected to urge again — this time in Wheeling Saturday night — that the moderate Manchin back the court pick.
Still, the survey showed a split over the impact of Kavanaugh on their vote for Manchin. Some 33 percent said they would be more likely to vote for Manchin if he backs Kavanaugh, while 43 percent said it would make “no difference.”
The Public Opinion Strategies poll was done for the Judicial Crisis Network, which supports Kavanaugh.
The Network’s chief counsel and policy director Carrie Severino said, “Joe Manchin has a choice: Stand with Chuck Schumer and his smear campaign or stand with the people of West Virginia who overwhelming support President’s Trump extraordinarily qualified nominee Brett Kavanaugh.”
