Pence hearing ‘God’s calling’ in spring decision on presidential bid

Former Vice President Mike Pence is hearing “God’s calling” for someone of his character, civility, and experience to be president, an indication of the direction he is heading as his family mulls a spring decision on a 2024 bid for the nation’s highest office.

In a discussion about his plans and final days in the White House with author, media executive, and evangelical leader Joel Rosenberg, Pence said he would look carefully at a calling to run, as he has in past political races.

“For the last 20 years, my aspiration has been simply to respond to what we perceive to be God’s calling in our life,” he said on the Rosenberg Report, one of Rosenberg’s outlets.

“And when I think about the great challenges facing this country, I do believe that 2024 will call for the new style of leadership grounded in the same principles that the Trump-Pence administration advanced,” said Pence in the second part of a longer interview with Rosenberg.

The former vice president is on a book tour to promote So Help Me God. He has traveled through key 2024 battleground states to talk about it and test the support he has. It is a standard practice that Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) is now following and former President Donald Trump is planning when he releases his book of letters next month.

Many Republicans expect Pence to jump into the race where he will face his former boss in a rare matchup. However, Pence is trailing Trump and DeSantis in 2024 polls.

He starts with the disadvantage of having Trump in the race and many Trump supporters unforgiving of his certification of the 2020 election results. He said that while he and Trump parted amicably, both have gone their own way.

In the interview, Pence said he believes voters are thirsty for a more civil, old-school style of politics that he identifies with.

“I do believe that democracy depends on heavy doses of civility and in both parties,” Pence said. “I sense that the American people long for that. People that worry about where the country is today. I tell them that we just got to have a government that is as good as our people.”

The former congressman and Indiana governor also said voters want experience in the White House, saying, “The great challenges that our country faces, I think, call for experience. I’ve been blessed with serving in leadership in the Congress, leading a state as governor, serving as vice president of the United States.”

Pence, who has long considered a presidential run, added, “The challenges here at home, it seems to me, call for experience. So we’re going to reflect on the experience that we have, and we’re going to determine whether or not this is the moment that we feel called to step forward and offer our services to the American people.”
