2020 GOP poll: Trump 64 percent, Romney 9 percent, Flake 1 percent, primary challenge unlikely

The Trump re-election campaign is cleared for takeoff and landing, according to a new 2020 GOP poll.

However, he stands at his lowest approval rating in a year, undermining his re-election plans.

The latest Zogby Poll, provided to Secrets, has President Trump dominating the upcoming primary race among Republican voters with no potential challenger higher than 9 percent.

The survey from Zogby Analytics has the race lineup this way:

  • Trump 64 percent.
  • Sen. Mitt Romney 9 percent.
  • Former Ohio Gov. John Kasich 8 percent.
  • Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley 6 percent.
  • Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush 2 percent.
  • Former Sen. Jeff Flake 1 percent.

There have been hints that Romney, Kasich, and Flake have considered a primary challenge to Trump.

“Even in a crowded field with established candidates and a former presidential nominee, President Trump receives two-thirds support from Republicans,” said Jonathan Zogby’s analysis.

In his poll, just 6 percent said that they were “unsure,” and even less, 4 percent, chose “someone else.”

Zogby said, “With an 81 percent job approval rating from Republicans and conservatives, it’s reasonable to assume Trump will not be primaried and has the support of the GOP for his 2020 re-election bid.”

But the poll was still not good news because among all voters, Zogby said that Trump’s approval rating is at its lowest in a year, at 41 percent.

“The president’s approval rating has decreased to its lowest point in a year! As it stands now, Trump’s job approval rating is 41 percent approve/56 percent disapprove, while 3 percent of voters are not sure,” said the analysis.

He said that the prolonged partial government shutdown was hurting the president.

Said the analysis:

His numbers are down across the board. Apart from men (51 percent approve/49 percent disapprove), Trump’s approval rating was down among almost every key category. Only a third of women voters approve of him, while nearly two-thirds disapprove of the job he is doing as president. He did not receive a majority approval from any age group; the president usually does well with voters over age 50. 45 percent of voters over the age of 65 approve of him but a majority of voters (54 percent) disapprove of Trump, which is usually the opposite.
