AP demotes the Internet: Lowercase ‘internet,’ ‘web’

The Internet, Web, or whatever you call it, has become old hat.

As of Wednesday, the AP Stylebook, the Bible of news style, lower cased “internet” and “web.”

That is just one of 250 new or updated entries in the new 2016 AP Stylebook released Wednesday.

“Starting today, AP uses lowercase internet and web in all instances,” AP said in a Twitter town hall with the nation’s media grammar nerds.

Some other changes:

— “emoji — A symbol, such as a cartoon face, hand gesture, animal or other object, that might be used instead of a word or as an illustration in text messages or on social media. Plural: emojis.”

— Whisky/whiskey.

What’s more, Chicago media blogger Robert Feder wrote that AP was “providing new guidance on the terms marijuana, cannabis and pot; cross dresser and transvestite; accident and crash; notorious and notoriety.”
