Buzz: Obamas tops in book sales, cool the Fox-Newsmax rivalry, and egos plague White House

Former President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle are the king and queen of nonfiction.

Barack Obama broke the first-week sales record with 835,000 copies of A Promised Land sold. And right behind him is Michelle Obama’s Becoming at 711,000, according to NPD BookScan.

Political memoirs are big sellers. Former President Bill Clinton sold the third most in his first week, for example. It remains unclear if President Trump is ready to pen his own blockbuster. …

  • Former George W. Bush chief of staff Andy Card has been around town to know all about the swamp and what landing a job in the White House does to egos. He told Georgetown University Institute of Politics and Public Service students, “It’s kind of exciting, but you have to keep your head in the game. One of the challenges you have is that most people who go to work in the White House automatically find that their head grows about four sizes.” …
  • The anti-Fox News media has been having a field day with Trump’s war with the cable network and the rising competition from Newsmax TV. But new data from Samba TV shared with Secrets shows that conservatives aren’t abandoning Fox for the upstart Newsmax. This month, Fox’s lowest viewership was 3.2 million a day to 700,000 for Newsmax. And, it added, “Households watching Fox are tuning in longer as well — 118.5 minutes per day, on average, compared to just 74 minutes per day for Newsmax.” …
  • Maxmillian Angerholzer III, the new head of the George & Barbara Bush Foundation, was only a teenager during 41’s presidency, but he told Secrets they inspired him to study politics. “I think about who I am as a person and the types of leaders that I look up to and what I think about in terms of, you know, American greatness, and President Bush has always been at the top of that list for me. So, it may sound a little hokey, but I couldn’t be more excited to have this opportunity now,” he said. …
