New York Times label of Mayra Flores as ‘far-right Latina’ draws GOP fire

Republicans expressed outrage on Wednesday over the negative label the New York Times gave to newly elected Rep. Mayra Flores (R-TX): “far-right Latina.”

In a news article, the New York Times, which has ladled praise on liberal Hispanics such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, assailed Flores as a new kind of Hispanic politician after her special election.

“What is most striking is that Ms. Flores won by shunning moderates, embracing the far right and wearing her support for Donald J. Trump on her sleeve — more Marjorie Taylor Greene than Kay Bailey Hutchison,” read the report.

The report continued: “The Trump age has given rise to a new brand of Texas Republicans, one of whom is already walking the halls of Congress: the far-right Latina.” The writer added in a tweet, “The MAGA Latina goes to Congress.”

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) was one of the first to push back against the label and story in the New York Times. The New York Times’s smear attempts are getting more and more desperate,” he tweeted.

“Only liberal elites and out-of-touch journalists think faith, family, and hard work are ‘extreme values.’ Mayra Flores is going to continue making history and setting an example for the next generation of Republican leaders,” National Republican Congressional Committee Communications Director Michael McAdams told Secrets.

Former Trump White House aide Sebastian Gorka said on Twitter, “They are clearly petrified of her. Go @MayraFlores2022!!”

Fellow Texas House candidate Irene Armendariz-Jackson said: “If wanting secure borders makes someone a ‘far right Latina’ then I guess @MayraFlores2022 isn’t the only one. What liberals call far right, I call American values.”

Flores also took on the New York Times report, which included an evaluation of a “long shot to win re-election” in the fall to a full two-year House term.

“It amazes me that because my values are rooted in God, Family, and Country, the liberal media takes it upon themselves to attack me and label me ‘far-right’. But at least they used the word ‘Latina’ over their other made-up terms. Seguimos Adelante!” said Flores.

Christina Pushaw, the spokeswoman for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is considered a star media critic in conservative circles, went a step further in hitting the New York Times report. She tweeted, “Everyone who disagrees with the legacy media Stalinists is ‘far right’ and ‘extreme,’” and added, “Per @nytimes, ‘extreme far right positions espoused by @MayraFlores2022 are America has borders, federal immigration law must be enforced; Pro-life (as are most Catholics, many in a 85% Latino district); Her constituents care more about inflation than J6 hearings.”
