Poll: Impeaching Trump, 43% yes, 45% no

Support is growing for impeaching President Trump, especially among younger Americans, and now those backing his removal from office top his Gallup approval rating.

A Morning Consult/Politico survey said Wednesday that the nation is divided on impeachment, with 43 percent giving it a green light and 45 percent opposed.

“Support for beginning impeachment proceedings was up 5 points from the previous poll, when fewer than 2 in 5 (38 percent) said Congress should get the ball rolling,” said the survey analysis

Gallup, meanwhile, put Trump’s approval rating at 41 percent.

In modern history, only one president — Bill Clinton — was impeached in a formal House vote. He was acquitted in a subsequent Senate vote. Richard Nixon resigned before the House voted.

While there have been sporadic calls in Congress to begin impeachment proceedings, there appears to be nothing to hang charges on. Some Democrats believe that the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia are enough, but other top Democrats dismiss impeachment talk.

But it’s the buzz in the public polls.

Said the analysis:

For the Americans who said they want to see Republicans impeach a sitting president of their own party, their desire appears to be borne from the notion that Trump is generally unfit for office. More than half (54 percent) of the voters who said Trump should be impeached said it was because “he is unfit to serve,” while 43 percent said it was because they thought Trump had committed an impeachable offense, such as treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors.

A majority of Democrats (54 percent) and independents (56 percent) who said Trump should be impeached cited a lack of fitness for the presidency, while a slim plurality of Republicans (48 percent) agreed.
