This week’s Liberal Media Scream features a concern in the media that the diverse group of likely Democratic presidential candidates filling newspapers, websites, and Twitter aren’t getting enough coverage and celebration from the press.
On CNN’s “Reliable Sources” Sunday, host Brian Stelter painted the media as coming up short when it comes to promoting liberal Democrats.
He championed “history-making” Democratic presidential candidates, citing the “incredible” number of women and people of color running, before lamenting, “I kind of feel this is being taken for granted.” He then asked if the press should be “talking more about the historic nature of this early primary season?”
Stelter on the Sunday:
“We are talking about a historic, a number of history-making candidates. It is incredible to see the number of women running, the number of people of color running for president already on the Democratic side, and yet I kind of feel this is being taken for granted. Should we, in the press, be talking more about the historic nature of this early primary season? ”
Guest David Zurawik, of the Baltimore Sun, agreed: “Not only should we be talking about it, I think if we feel that way, we should be celebrating it, this diversity, all of these different voices are going to make this conversation of democracy in the election much, much stronger.”
Media Research Center Vice President of Research Brent Baker explains our weekly pick: “A few weeks after a guest on ‘Reliable Sources’ seriously maintained ‘the prestige press in this country has a pro-Trump bias,’ this week we have the show’s host fretting that the media are not enthusiastic enough about liberal Democratic presidential candidates. Diversity in this case is about race and gender, not ideology. And Stelter wonders why the press are held in such low regard?”
Rating: Four out of five screams.
