Fox News’s decision to kiss off prime-time host Tucker Carlson is looking worse.
While we don’t know exactly what caused their breakup, it is becoming crystal clear what made Carlson a top draw for Fox and why he should easily succeed in his new media adventures.
AMERICA ISN’T READY FOR THE ERA OF AI NATIONAL SECURITY THREATS
Gallup and the Knight Foundation tell us in a new survey that Carlson is the nation’s most favored source for news and analysis, beating out network anchors, presidents, and late-night hosts.
Asked which “person” the public turns to most “to get information,” Carlson was first on Gallup’s list of 20 influencers. He was followed by MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow. Others weren’t close, including President Joe Biden or former President Donald Trump.

Carlson received 113 mentions and Maddow got 107 mentions in the survey involving 2,800 participants who typed in their responses, of which there were 900.
Network anchors were further down. NBC’s Lester Holt received 55 mentions, ABC’s David Muir got 44, and CBS anchor Norah O’Donnell didn’t even show up on the Top 20 list.
The Gallup-Knight survey made clear that no single name dominated, but Carlson’s mentions were significantly more than nearly everybody else on the list.
The wide-ranging survey said that those on the list were picked because viewers trusted them and felt they got a good perspective on the news.
“The public individuals Americans turn to most often are seen by their followers as likable, trustworthy and offering perspectives beyond mainstream news,” read the survey analysis.
It also said that individual influencers, rather than big media institutions, were becoming the source of news and analysis for most of the public. “In an era of widespread institutional distrust, the power of individuals with wide-reaching platforms and loyal audiences is more potent than ever,” read the analysis, confirming a trend of people following individual news figures instead of news outlets.
