Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton‘s favorable rating among Democrats has hit a sky-high 85 percent, with all but 5 percent of the party having an opinion of her, a big blow to potential challenger Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who remains unknown to most, according to a new poll
The latest Economist/YouGov poll finds that while virtually everybody knows of and has a view of Clinton, 49 percent don’t know who the Massachusetts senator is.
“Warren has a long way to go to become anywhere near as popular with Democrats as the former first lady,” said the polling outfit’s Kathy Frankovic.
Warren has been touted as a liberal-progressive alternative to the more “moderate” Clinton. Some Democrats are seeking a more activist candidate who will hit the Republicans on key issues, while Clinton seems more interested in bridging Washington’s political divide.
As a result, many progressives favor Warren, but the new poll finds that she trails Clinton horribly in several areas.
Some examples:
— 78 percent of Democrats feel Clinton has the qualifications to be president. It’s just 31 percent for Warren.
— 69 percent of Democrats want Clinton to run for president, only 23 percent want Warren to run. Some 27 percent don’t want Warren to run.
— Three in four Democrats said Clinton shared their values; just under half say that about Warren.
