He hasn’t reached 50 percent in public approval polls all year and most believe the country is moving backwards under his leadership. So how is President Obama staying ahead of Republican Mitt Romney in the presidential race?
GOP pollster Kellyanne Conway has an idea: Voters feel sorry for Obama.
“Some voters are seduced into thinking that four years is not enough,” she said.
And, Conway charged, the president works voters by playing the victim under assault by congressional Republicans and negative TV ads. “He has slickness, salesman-like qualities, victimhood,” she said.
“The cruel irony for President Obama,” she added, “is for him to succeed, he in part will be seen as a victim, a victim of the congressional Republicans, a victim of people who are denying him his presidency, a victim of people who never wanted him to be president, a victim of the Hillary (Clinton) voters who are still upset about 2008.”
But, she said, “If you’re the president you have to make a decision. Do you want to be seen as a victim or a leader. You probably can’t do both.”
