‘Speaker’ Marjorie Taylor Greene

To mark International Women’s Day, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) was given the speaker’s gavel to open the House, a remarkable rise of a career that started two years ago with a Democratic-driven censure.

Hammering down the gavel this morning, Greene said, “The House will be in order.”

It was the first time Greene was the Speaker pro tempore, filling in for House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

Her stepping up to the rostrum symbolized her comeback from two years of limbo after then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi orchestrated Greene’s banishment from all House committees because Democrats didn’t like some of her past controversial statements.

Since the Republicans took control of the House and McCarthy the speakership with Greene’s help, the two-term lawmaker has seen her influence grow. In fact, after her cameo, she left to attend a hearing of the COVID-19 select committee, where she is expected to play a large role in questioning Biden officials on the Chinese origins of the virus.
