Spam isn’t for everyone, but the canned meat specialty is beloved in Hawaii where it was introduced during World War II and remains a top seller.
Hawaii gobbles down more Spam than any other state in the nation. And, apparently, it is served at the McDonald’s where the White House press pool holds when President Obama works out during his two-week Christmas vacation.
Gardiner Harris, the New York Times reporter on Tuesday’s pool, and a witty pool writer of note, typed this observation this morning:
“Motorcade headed to Marine Corps Base Hawaii, where POTUS has his usual morning gym workout.
“Pool is holding at a nearby McDonalds, whose localized breakfast menu includes a deluxe breakfast that includes Spam. Your pooler believes strongly in being sensitive to local culture and its offerings. But there are some traditions that are unequivocally wrong (slavery and child labor spring to mind), and braised Spam with scrambled eggs falls into that unfortunate category of unacceptable localized abominations.
“If Scrapple had been on the menu, this judgment would quite obviously be different.”
