95% shop at Walmart, 89% eat at McDonald’s

Forget all those stories on the end of “brick and mortar” retailers, especially when it comes to Walmart.

According to a new consumer survey, virtually every shopper in America visited a Walmart in the last year — 95 percent.

NPD Group, which tracks business and consumer trends, put the Arkansas-based retailer where shoppers can buy everything from Cheetos to Remingtons at the head of its Top 25 Retailer/Restaurant Checkout Penetration Index.

The top restaurant was McDonalds, at 89 percent, and also the second on the Top 25 list.

In the report provided to Secrets, the firm also confirmed a fast-food trend: Chick-fil-A is surging. Some 47 percent of all consumers at there at least once last year.

“The battle for every consumer dollar is heating up, and we must shift from studying what consumers purchase to how they spend their money,” said Marshal Cohen, NPD’s chief industry analyst. “Consumers spending on experiences is overlapping with their purchases of products, making every item and visit so important to competing in today’s rapidly changing marketplace.”
