8 in 10 hate gas prices–a 38% jump!

More bad news for President Obama’s reelection. With polls showing that surging gas prices are nicking the president’s approval rating, a new Pew Research Center survey Wednesday found that 85 percent think the news about gas prices is bad, a 38 percent one month jump and the worst finding in a year.

Another 12 percent said the news about gas prices is a mix of good and bad, and for 2 percent who must ride bikes, it’s good news.

Pew President Andrew Kohut said that the price of gas could influence the outcome of the general election. Worse, his poll found, “the good news about jobs was offset by the bad news about gas prices.”

Still, Pew’s poll should have Obama smiling. Of 33 voter traits Pew gauges–whites, blacks, Southeners, men, women, etc.–Mitt Romney beats Obama among only five groups, all variation of white voters. Rick Santorum beats Obama in in just three.
