President Obama has been mocked for his new campaign motto “Forward,” so it’s only fair to now highlight those taking shots at Mitt Romney’s “Believe in America.”
Thursday’s Crystal Ball from the University of Virginia’s Larry Sabato notes that the line is in the opening sentence of “The Godfather,” which, his team says, is “probably not what Romney was trying to evoke.” The line is spoken by mortician Amerigo Bonasera who is seeking the deaths of two men who beat his daughter.
Sabato’s team also notes that it was used shortly by 2004 Democratic presidential candidate Sen. John Kerry.
To help Romney find a new slogan, the Crystal Ball team tweeted for help. Alex Burns of Politico suggested a Nixonish “Sock it to me.” Jason Whitman of the Young Republican National Federation offered, “Inside, I’m a wild man.” and Tom Bevan of RealClearPolitics suggested a simple, “America Works.”
