Coronavirus fighter Dr. Anthony Fauci has won the Washington bureaucracy’s “Oscar.”
With help from the “Racing Presidents” of his favorite baseball team, Fauci was named the 2020 Federal Employee of the Year by the Partnership for Public Service, which hands out the Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medals, or Sammies.
Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and who is often seen wearing a Nationals mask, received the award from the team mascots at his home.
The award is considered the bureaucracy’s Oscars.
“Dr. Fauci has become a household name for his steady hand and unwavering commitment to his country during the COVID-19 pandemic,” Partnership for Public Service President Max Stier said in a statement. “Dr. Fauci represents the very best of public service, and it is an honor to award him the 2020 Federal Employee of the Year. We thank him for his dedication and for inspiring the next generation of public servants,” he added.
Fauci has been one of the Trump administration’s leading voices during the coronavirus crisis, sometimes clashing with the president. He has recently urged the nation to stick with the battle through the winter.
A Sammies award program will be shown Monday on several platforms.
