Insiders compete for a good ‘Room Rater’ on Skype/Zoom backgrounds

One of the hottest social media accounts for Washington insiders is Room Rater on Twitter, @ratemyskyperoom.

The account judges the backgrounds on Zoom and Skype calls and sometimes gives advice.

For some insiders, the rating has sparked competition with friends and foes. But for most, it’s a curiosity.

For former Obama deputy chief of staff Jim Messina, it graded a 4 out of 10 and said his looked like a “near hostage video.”

Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine was downgraded to 7/10 because electric cords were showing.

But GOP strategist Ron Bonjean did better, 9/10, good for a Republican on the site that seems to favor Democrats. “Great depth. Our fourth suit of armor on Room Rater. Move to left of frame. Add a bit more light. 9/10,” it said of the co-founder of ROKK Solutions, a bipartisan public relations firm.

Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar sat in front of a standard bookshelf but won 10/10 and this comment: “Well presented bookwall. Good mix of books/objects/shapes. Standing with truth, justice and democracy.”

And then there’s Roger Stone, clearly disliked by the social media account, which wrote of his dull background, “Blank wall. Still a felon. Lamp seam violation. 0/10.”
