America’s youngest generation of adults, Generation Z, is continuing a trend toward identifying as LGBT.
In the latest Gallup survey, 1 in 6 of those aged 18-23 “consider themselves to be something other than heterosexual,” or LGBT.
Just under 16% said they were LGBT, and 78.9% said they were “straight/heterosexual” in the new survey.
By comparison, 2% of baby boomers consider themselves lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. It’s 3.8% for Generation X and 9.1% for millennials.

In addition to showing how successive generations identify themselves as LGBT in greater percentages, Gallup also found that the overwhelming group is not gay or lesbian but bisexual, at 54%.
Among Generation Z, for example, 72% who identify as LGBT are bisexual. Just 2.1% said they are gay, 1.4% lesbian, and 1.8% transgender.
And while they are a huge focus of the media and liberal politics, overall, just 5.6% of the nation self-identifies as LGBT. By comparison, 13.4% of the population is black and 18.5% is Hispanic.
