For the first time since his 2017 inauguration, President Trump is no longer the odds-on favorite to win in 2020.
In a shocking turnaround that parallels his recent string of victories, former Vice President Joe Biden has caught up to Trump, and both are now 11-10 favorites to win, according to the latest betting odds from Oddschecker.
And as Biden has surged, challenger Sen. Bernie Sanders has sunk and now sits at a 40-1 chance to win.
“If you had told most Americans even a fortnight ago that Joe Biden would be neck-and-neck with Trump, they’d have thought you were mad — but here we are,” said Oddschecker spokesman Pete Watt.
The race has changed as Biden has surged and the coronavirus has whacked the White House and Wall Street.
Oddschecker said:
“Both men’s odds of +110 indicate that the books believe they have a 47.60% chance of emerging from the election with the keys to the White House. A reminder: odds of +110 mean that a bet of $10 will return $21 in total, with a profit of $11.
“The significance of this shift in the market is that it marks the first time ever that Trump has not been the clear favorite for the 2020 presidential election, having led the market since Oddsmakers’ began taking bets in February 2017.”
The odds are taken from the British betting market since political betting is prohibited in the United States.
Watt told us, “The Democratic primaries have thrown up surprise after surprise, with many different candidates seeming like the clear front-runner at times. Spare a thought for Sen. Kamala Harris. It is, however, looking increasingly likely that the former vice president has got the content wrapped up, and that there will be no further shocks … or will there?”
