2020 odds: Cuomo surges, third behind Trump, Biden

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a 2020 presidential afterthought before his popular performance fighting the coronavirus, has surged ahead of Sen. Bernie Sanders to become the third top bet to win the presidency, according to oddsmakers.

Once a 250-1 bet, Cuomo now stands at 25-1, still a long shot, according to Oddschecker, which charts political betting in Britain, where it’s legal and regulated.

The current 2020 odds:

  • Donald Trump, 1-1 (+100)
  • Joe Biden, 11-8 (+138)
  • Andrew Cuomo, 25-1 (+2,500)
  • Bernie Sanders, 33-1 (+3,300)
  • Mike Pence, 50-1 (+5,000)

Although Cuomo decided against entering the 2020 race, his name has surfaced as a top pick by Democratic delegates if there is a fight during the nominating convention that leads to no choice on the first ballot.

Oddschecker spokesman Pete Watt told us Monday: “Just three days ago, bookmakers gave Cuomo a 0.4% chance (250-1) of winning the U.S. election. Today, the best odds on him are 25-1, indicating his probability has increased by nearly tenfold to 3.85%. It is also worth noting that bettors are falling in line with the oddsmakers, with 61% of bets in the last 24 hours on this market going in favor of Andrew Cuomo.”

President Trump’s approval rating has held steady during the crisis, and several polls have shown that a majority approve of his virus effort. But those were done before he extended the national precautions out another month.

Cuomo has seen much better approval polls for his effort, even leading Trump to call him a better 2020 Democratic candidate than Joe Biden.
