In a substantial move aimed at building the Democratic Party in the age of MAGA, Simon Rosenberg has closed up his New Democrat Network ideas operation and moved his efforts to a Substack newsletter called the “Hopium Chronicles.”
Rosenberg, one of the few people who accurately argued that the 2022 “red wave” was a mirage, said, “I feel like we are entering a new political era in America, one that requires new strategies and approaches.”

He believes the MAGA movement poisons political talk and said it’s necessary to counter that.
“While they spread lies, we respond with truth and data. Hopium is a rejection of the darkness they are trying to spread. It is a way of standing up for our great country and its remarkable people. It is the key to how we win,” he said, explaining his new outlet is a combination of “hope” and “optimism.”
Just as the Republican coalition did not re-assemble around extremist Senate candidates after brutal primaries in 2022, it is unlikely to re-assemble around Trump, or I think a far too extreme DeSantis. #GetTo55 https://t.co/Uf65Mek6XU

On Wednesday, he rolled out a new idea to counter MAGA with women. “Democrats should consider developing something I’m calling a ‘A New Agenda for Women and Families.’ The idea is to go on offense on a series of issues critical to women and healthy kids and families, and not let the anti-woke ridiculousness and ongoing MAGA extremism continue to drive this important debate,” Rosenberg, who has focused on minorities in past efforts to boost the party, said.
For the women’s effort, he suggested passing laws to protect abortion and support gun control.
