Never Trumpers host dueling ‘Anti-CPAC’ confab

Never Trumpers are rarely accused of lacking chutzpah.

Case in point: The center-right group Principles First is hosting its fourth annual summit in Washington this month, overlapping the last two days of the annual CPAC confab that is set to feature former President Donald Trump’s record-holding 14th appearance.

Dubbed the “anti-CPAC,” the three-day Principles First conference will feature many faces of the Never Trump movement, including Bill Kristol, George Conway, and former Illinois Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger.

Unlike CPAC, which focuses on younger Republican and MAGA activists, Principles First aligns with those who follow the politics of former President George W. Bush, Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT), and the late Sen. John McCain.

“Generally, they’re conservatives or centrists,” spokesman Tony Franquiz said, who “are alarmed by the illiberal direction of the party. We also see some Democrats and independents who share our outlook.”

The group expects 500 to attend its conference on Feb. 23-25. At CPAC, gathering Feb. 21-24, attendance has hit 10,000 in recent years.
