Americans of all stripes are fired up and ready for President Obama to go.
A new poll reveals that no demographic, not even African-Americans, Hispanics or Democrats side with changing the Constitution to allow Obama to run for and serve a third term.
The survey from McLaughlin & Associates followed the president’s comments in July that he could win a third term. Traveling in Ethiopia, he said, “I actually think I’m a pretty good president. I think if I ran, I could win. But I can’t.”
Voters, however, don’t want to give him that option. By a margin of 77 percent to 17 percent, voters said “no” when asked, “Do you want to see the Constitution amended so that Barack Obama could run for a third term as president?”
Among Democrats the margin was 59 percent to 32 percent. It was closest among African Americans, 43 percent to 42 percent. Others:
— Obama supporters, 57 percent no.
— Republicans, 94 percent no.
— Independents, 83 percent no.
— Whites, 85 percent no.
— Hispanics, 67 percent no.
— Men, 82 percent no.
— Women 73 percent no.
— Under 40, 69 percent no.
— Age 41-55, 76 percent no.
— 56-65, 79 percent no.
— Over 65, 91 percent no.
The overwhelming numbers suggested to poll analyst Rob Schmidt that voters, even Obama’s backers, don’t want to mess with the Constitution.
“It is quite apparent that voters do not want to give Obama a third term. While right of center voters are nearly uniform in their opposition, the overwhelming lack of appetite for another four years of President Obama is also rooted in an unwillingness to stray from convention, since most Democrats also oppose the move. President Obama is beloved by his base, but most seem ready to move on,” he wrote.
