Newly minted 2020 presidential candidate Joe Biden is already starting to show that he is unique among the 20 Democratic White House hopefuls by being able to attract President Trump’s base of voters who are older, male, and white, according to a battleground state poll.
A Zogby Analytics survey of likely voters in Wisconsin, which Trump won in a surprise in 2016, showed that Biden would easily beat the president, 50%-40%, by eating into the Republican’s base.
But the president has strengthened his position with suburban women in the state who believe he is the best on two issues, growing the economy and keeping America safe, it said.
While the survey shows Trump losing to all of the top tier Democrats, including South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg, 44%-41%, it’s Biden who stands out for challenging the president on his playing field, a potential sign of trouble for the White House.
The Zogby analysis points to Trump’s troubles:
- White voters, Biden leads 48% to 43%.
- Voters over 65, Biden leads 52% to 37%.
- Men, both are tied at 46%.

The survey shows Trump’s strength among suburban women, a group that didn’t strongly back him in the 2018 midterm congressional elections like they did in 2016.
But, found Zogby, while Trump does well with suburban women against other candidates, Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders have the edge over Trump.
Overall, the poll shows that Trump is in trouble in one of the key blue wall states that propelled him in 2016 over Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Trump campaign officials have told Secrets that they are holding their own in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Michigan, and expect their base to be with them on Election Day.
They plan to hammer Democrats for backing an expensive and liberal agenda while talking up improvements to the economy.
And that’s an issue where Zogby found Trump could pick up support, especially among women who are most concerned about the economy and feel that the president has the best plan.
Said the Zogby analysis: “The reason the president does well with suburban women is revealed by a separate question we asked all voters: ‘Who do trust more to grow the economy’ and ‘keep America safe.’ Among suburban women, Trump is trusted over Democratic leaders to ‘grow the economy’ 49% to 33% and ‘keep America safe’ 46% to 35%.”
