Liberal groups are planning to protest Hillary Clinton’s $2,700 a person “conversation” Thursday at the Los Angeles home of Justin Bieber’s manager to demand that she hold a free “conversation” with them to discuss her support for genetically modified foods.
“We wouldn’t ask you to spend $2700 for a chance to talk to Hillary. But what if hundreds of us congregated around a lemonade stand outside the event? Would Hillary come out and talk to us about GMO labeling?” said a Facebook post from the Organic Consumers Association.
It will be Clinton’s third fundraising trip to Los Angeles. It will be held at the home of Scooter Braun and his wife, Yael. Braun manages Bieber and singer Ariana Grande. The Facebook notice gave Braun’s address.
The normally calm and star-studded affairs of the past Clinton visits, however, look to be disrupted by the groups eager to convince Clinton to change her mind on GMOs.
“Feel free to bring your kids to sell lemonade, provided by us! Bring signs and pots and pans to make some noise. If we are loud enough, maybe she will come out and converse with us,” said the posting. They also plan to promote a MoveOn.org petition on the issue to Clinton.
In an email, the Organic Consumers Association slapped the “high-dollar fundraiser,” and said they wanted to talk with Clinton about a recently passed House bill that would preempt state and federal laws requiring labels on GMO foods.
In a speech last year, Clinton endorsed safely-tasted GMO seeds and food. In the video above, she said, “I stand in favor of using seeds and products that have a proven track record.” She also said that “there is a big gap between what the facts are, and what the perceptions are.”
From the protest email:
Hillary Clinton is hosting a $2700/plate fundraiser at the home of Justin Bieber’s manager. The event is billed as a ‘Conversation with Hillary.’
Lorna Paisley, from Label GMOs, will speak at a rally and press conference outside the fundraiser, where protesters will also run a lemonade stand for those who would like to have a ‘conversation with Hillary,’ but who can’t afford to attend a $2700/plate fundraiser.
Clinton has proclaimed her support for genetic engineering, and accepts campaign contributions from Monsanto. But she has not told the public where she stands on the issue of requiring food manufacturers to disclose that their products contain GMOs. She has also has not told voters what her position is on H.R. 1599, a bill passed by the House, that would preempt state and federal GMO labeling laws.
