Pew: Facebook has no competition, 68% use it versus Instagram, 35%, Twitter, 24%

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg may feel like his company is battling fierce competition, as he told senators Tuesday, but user statistics compiled by the Pew Research Center show that few other sites where people write messages and post photos and video come close.

Pew found that 68 percent of Americans use Facebook, and that rises to 74 percent among women and 81 percent of those 18 to 29 years old.

The user numbers:

  • Facebook, 68 percent.
  • Instagram, 35 percent.
  • Pinterest, 29 percent.
  • Snapchat, 27 percent.
  • LinkedIn, 25 percent.
  • Twitter, 24 percent.
  • WhatsApp, 22 percent.
  • YouTube, said Pew, tops Facebook at 73 percent, but regular usage is much lower. Some 74 percent say they use Facebook every day. For YouTube, it’s 46 percent.

And when it comes to where Americans get their news, Facebook again dominates. Some 45 percent get news through Facebook, double any other website.
