Who knew? One of the biggest killers of birds are big buildings with lots of windows.
In a study the Washington-based American Bird Conservancy shared with Secrets, three Illinois researchers revealed that 300 million to one billion birds are killed in collisions with buildings in the United States every year.
The result is almost as nasty, said the study in the Journal of Field Ornithology and circulated by the bird conservancy. Scavengers like racoons and foxes sense the killer impact of buildings and hide out in bushes and other cover waiting for dinner to drop in.
The study offers no solution to bird collisions, but does suggest that the best way to keep the scavengers away is to pave over the areas around buildings so there is no hiding place for them.
