The fall election kicks into high gear this week with the first major teaming of the Romney campaign and the Republican National Committee to whack President Obama as the “King of Debt.”
In an orchestrated fashion, Team Mitt and the RNC will be rolling out online advertising and conducting conference calls in key battleground states to highlight the massive debt collected under Obama and his inability to make good on promises to halve the nation’s deficit by the end of his first term in office.
The effort is prompted by new polling that finds Americans growing weary with federal debt, worried about what will be required to pay it off and scared about the future their kids will inherit.
It starts today with a web ad titled “Empty promises: Debt and deficits,” featuring Obama’s earlier promises to trim spending. “His serial disregard of the nation’s finances is mortgaging our children’s future, guaranteeing that the next generation will not be better off,” said the ad.
The RNC is also releasing a research paper and series of news clips that dub the president the “King of Debt,” and they will also begin a series of conference calls to regional reporters in key battleground states to drive home the message that the president’s spending has been reckless.
The president’s team, however, is ready for that attack, urging voters to give them a break over the debt since spending was required to pull the nation out of the economic tailspin Obama inherited from former President George W. Bush. “We’re not there yet, it’s still too hard for too many, but we’re coming back,” said a new Obama online ad that counters the GOP message.
