A top Democratic advisor and ex-Obama insider is cheering the potential nomination of Sen. Ted Cruz and Donald Trump.
“I think the person we most want to run against is probably Donald Trump,” said former Obama senior advisor Dan Pfeiffer.
But then he said, “we need Ted Cruz to be the nominee.”
He explained that Cruz is the candidate sought by conservatives who believe that past GOP nominees have been too centrist and not attractive enough to activists.
And a hard right candidate is likely to be beaten in a general election, he suggested at the 17th Annual American Democracy Conference hosted by the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics.
He also said that Cruz is a made-up conservative. “I’m pretty sure that Ted Cruz invented himself to be that person. I don’t think he was like this in his Ivy League education,” said Pfeiffer.
A race against Cruz, he said, “I think that’s the best case.”
