Oh, yes, they went there.
This week’s Liberal Media Scream features CNN’s John Harwood suggesting that GOP leaders will have better relations with Joe Biden than former President Barack Obama because Biden is white. His host, Don Lemon, concurred, “I didn’t want to go there, but, I mean, they feel like he’s one of them.”
Going racial on Friday night, Harwood said there’s a chance Senate Republicans will cooperate with Biden since, “first of all, Joe Biden is a white man,” while “Barack Obama’s race played a role in the intensity of the grassroots and the opposition in Washington to what he was trying to do.”
After Harwood said that “Biden is going to set an entirely different tone” because “he’s fundamentally an honest person, he’s fundamentally a decent person,” anchor Lemon said: “I’m glad you said that first part about Joe Biden being a white man. I didn’t want to go there, but, I mean, they feel like he’s one of them.”
From the 11 p.m. EST hour Friday night of CNN Tonight with Lemon, picking up after Lemon expressed hope a Republican Senate would work with Biden, but concern it might not:
John Harwood: “Well, I think your skepticism is well justified, and the record of the last 12 years is one of blowtorch opposition from Republicans to Democratic presidents. There are a couple of things that are different this time. First of all, Joe Biden is a white man. Barack Obama’s race played a role in the intensity of the grassroots and the opposition in Washington to what he was trying to do, so that makes a difference.”
“I think Joe Biden is going to set an entirely different tone. He’s fundamentally an honest person, he’s fundamentally a decent person. And we’ll see whether honesty and decency and rationality cuts any ice with some increment of Republican senators necessary to get things done.”
Don Lemon: “Boy, what a great conversation this was, and, John, I’m glad you said that first part about Joe Biden being a white man. I didn’t want to go there, but, I mean, they may feel like he’s one of them — he’s Joe, you know, from the old days, and maybe they may want to work with him. And if that’s the reason they work with him, then so be it. I hope it happens.”
Media Research Center Vice President Brent Baker explains our weekly pick: “Harwood and Lemon see the world through a liberal prism in which race and ethnic identity reign supreme, defining who you are. So, they presume everyone sees others through that race-based filter, are just as race-obsessed as they are, and thus, it makes it all too easy for them to impugn political opponents as motivated by racism without having to provide any evidence for the charge.”
