Americans want ‘obey’ husband erased from wedding vows

Most Americans want weddings to stick to traditions like tossing the bouquet and exchanging rings, but they are done with having the woman promise to “obey” her husband.

A new YouGov poll finds that men and women think that’s an out-of-date tradition and should be shelved. Overall 49 percent want it gone, while just 33 percent it preserved.

Among the sexes, men are split, with 37 percent voting to keep “obey” in the vows, and 43 percent ready to surrender.

But among women, just 24 percent want to it to stay, said YouGov.

The traditional vow is: “I…take you to be my husband, to have and to hold from this day forward; for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love, cherish, and obey, till death us do part, according to God’s holy law.”

But according to reports, more and more couples are skipping over “obey,” just like Lady Diana in her vows to Prince Charles in 1981.
