The walkout came a week after the school shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, in which a gunman killed at least 21 people, including 19 students and two teachers.
Students began the walkout, organized by Minnesota Teen Activists, around 12:30 p.m. and descended upon Gold Medal Park, according to a report.

“It’s important for us because we want to stand up for what’s right and change our government,” one student said.
Several demands of state lawmakers were made, the report noted.
The students are seeking the creation of a statewide advisory group, as well as a decrease in “traumatic” active shooter drills, a ban on AR-15-style assault rifles, and state-funded mental health assistance for all students in Minnesota.
“Our lives matter,” one student said. “We have hopes and dreams, and we deserve to live.”

Another individual involved in the walkout, a junior at Fridley High School, said the school shooting in Texas was made all the more demoralizing because it followed a racially motivated shooting in Buffalo.
