Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and other GOP senators say they’re discouraged with what they’ve heard ahead of President Obama’s State of the Union address scheduled for Tuesday night and have made clear they’re not going to be passing many of the president’s plans he’s expected to lay out.
The Kentucky Republican said the Senate won’t consider any new taxes on Americans and instead is looking for common ground with the president for comprehensive tax reform. Obama is expected to lay out new taxes on investments and inheritances during his speech Tuesday and that appears to be a non-starter with Senate Republicans.
McConnell said the Senate will look at ways to alter the Affordable Care Act and produce a cybersecurity bill. Many believe the president and congressional Republicans can find common ground on a cybersecurity bill, but any changes to the Affordable Care Act will be met with stiff opposition from congressional Democrats and Obama.
