Secret Service arrests Iowa man outside White House

The Secret Service arrested an Iowa man who had an illegal rifle, 40 rounds of ammunition and a six-inch fixed blade in his car near the White House Wednesday, an agency spokesman confirmed.

R.J. “Renae” Kapheim, 41, from Davenport, Iowa, approached a Secret Service checkpoint at 15th and E Streets just before 1 p.m. and told an officer that someone from his hometown told him to come to the White House — so he drove all the way to Washington.

Officers found a .30-30 rifle, more than 40 rounds of ammunition and the blade in his car, a 2013 Volkswagen Passat, which was parked at Constitution and 15th and 16th streets.

The officers charged Kapheim with possession of an unregistered firearm. Once the agency investigates him further, he could face additional charges.
