Biden hosts McCarthy at the White House in huddle with congressional leaders

President Joe Biden will host House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) at the White House as part of a highly anticipated meeting before McCarthy potentially takes the gavel from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).

The White House updated Biden’s public schedule Tuesday morning an hour before McCarthy and McConnell, along with Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), are expected at the executive campus “to discuss legislative priorities through the end of 2022.”

Press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was asked about the meeting, promised by Biden during his post-midterm elections news conference, during her Monday briefing, but she declined to provide details.

“Congress has just returned, so the president is looking forward to talking to, speaking with — to Democratic and Republican leadership,” she said. “This is something that he is indeed looking forward to, and we will make that happen as soon as we can.”

McCarthy has yet to secure enough support from House Republicans to become the next speaker, which will be decided by a January floor vote. Biden has conceded since the GOP clinched enough seats to gain a House majority next Congress that he does not have a strong relationship with the California lawmaker.

“I think he’s the Republican leader, and I haven’t had much of occasion to talk to him, but I will be talking to him,” he said during his post-election press conference.
