President Trump’s campaign reportedly covered roughly $228,000 in legal expenses for his personal attorney Michael Cohen, raising questions as to whether campaign finance laws were violated.
According to records from the Federal Election Commission, McDermott, Will, and Emery, the law firm representing Cohen, received three payments from Trump’s campaign between October 2017 and January 2018.
While the reason for the payments is unclear, sources familiar with the situation told ABC News that the payments are not connected to his legal battle with former porn star Stormy Daniels.
Daniels is suing Cohen for defamation after he paid her $130,000 to keep quiet about her alleged affair with Trump.
As ABC noted, the payments would violate campaign finance laws if they were in relation to his fight with Daniels since it doesn’t relate to the Trump campaign. However, if the payments pertained to the Russia investigation or another campaign-related matter, they would likely not violate the law.
Neither the Trump campaign or Cohen’s attorney commented on the matter.
