Obama calls on new Iraqi leader to unite country

During a rare break from his two week vacation on Martha’s Vineyard, President Obama Monday addressed continued concerns in war-torn Iraq after Iraqi and Kurdish forces managed to retake the strategic Mosul dam early Monday.

Obama called on incoming Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to “complete the work of forming a new, broad based based inclusive Iraqi government.”

“Without that progress,” Obama said, “extremists like [the Islamic State] can continue to prey upon Iraq’s divisions.”
