New U.S. guidelines released Monday by the White House ban racial profiling by federal law enforcement, however border security checkpoints and airports are exempt from the new regulations.
The guidelines issued Monday call for a ban on profiling based on national origin and other characteristics and the Justice Department has said it hopes the new regulations can be a model for local law enforcement agencies across the country.
The new policy will require new training for law enforcement and new data collection training. The guidelines, which were five years in the making, come in the wake of two high-profile cases involving the deaths of unarmed black men by white police officers.
