President Joe Biden is tipped to announce a reelection campaign in the new year, according to White House chief of staff Ron Klain.
“The president will make that decision. I expect it shortly after the holiday,” Klain said Monday at the Wall Street Journal’s CEO Council summit. “I expect the decision will be to do it.”
BIDEN RETURNS TO THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL, BUT FAR FROM GEORGIA
Klain’s comments have stoked speculation concerning a possible announcement after Biden called on the Democratic National Committee last week to upend the party’s primary calendar so South Carolina hosts the first nominating contest. Biden secured the 2020 nomination in South Carolina, so the move would benefit him.
Biden and his aides have reiterated that it is his “intention” to seek a second term but conceded a family discussion regarding the decision did not take place over the Thanksgiving break.
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre declined to disclose a deadline for Biden, who turned 80 in November.
“I’m certainly not going to lay out what that conversation could look like or potentially be,” Jean-Pierre told reporters last month. “That is the president’s, clearly, prerogative to have that conversation with his family to make that decision.”

“The president intends to run, and I’ll leave it there,” she added.
