A CNN article downplayed former United Nations Ambassador John Bolton’s policy credentials, initially referring to the newly named White House national security adviser as a “Fox News analyst” and a “Fox commentator.”
The article, published Thursday night by CNN media correspondent Brian Stelter, said, “Thursday’s announcement about Fox commentator turned National Security Adviser John Bolton is just the latest example of the TV-to-White House pipeline.”
A tweet by CNN linking to the article also called Bolton a “talking head.”

Not until nine paragraphs down does the article mention that Bolton has extensive experience working in the federal government. “Of course, Bolton is not ‘just’ a TV pundit,” it said. “He is a lawyer with decades of experience in foreign policy circles, known for his hawkish views. He served as a United States Ambassador to the United Nations during the George W. Bush administration.”
The White House announced Thursday that Bolton would be coming in to replace H.R. McMaster.
