White House reopens public tours as holiday season begins

The White House announced that public tours will resume on Dec. 2, following a temporary pause caused by the construction of the new ballroom.

The ballroom project, which also required tearing down the East Wing, has stirred controversy and renewed debate about the preservation of historic presidential spaces. The new ballroom is expected to be completed before the end of President Donald Trump’s second term in January 2029.

The return of tours coincides with the holiday season, when visitors traditionally see the State Floor decorated for Christmas. This year’s décor will be curated by first lady Melania Trump, whose past holiday displays drew viral attention and criticism for their dramatic or unconventional designs.

“Visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy the beloved annual tradition that transforms the White House into a festive reflection of the spirit, warmth, faith, and hope of the holiday season,” the first lady said in a press release.

Additionally, according to her press release, the tours will feature “an updated route offering guests the opportunity to experience the history and beauty of the People’s House.”

Visitors can once again request a tour by contacting their member of Congress. Tour slots for December will open 30 days before each scheduled date, while availability for January 2026 is expected to be released to congressional offices sometime in December.
