White House Easter Egg Roll gets patriotic boost with America250 partnership

As families gathered on the South Lawn for the annual White House Easter Egg Roll on Monday, this year’s celebration carried a distinctly patriotic tone — marking the lead-up to the nation’s 250th birthday.

The event, which dates back to 1878, has long been a signature initiative of the first lady’s office, with each administration putting its own stamp on the tradition. This year, that tradition intersected with a major national milestone, as the America250 effort took on a prominent role — a partnership that came directly from the office of first lady Melania Trump.

“We are celebrating a very special Easter Egg Roll this year, because it’s [the] 250th birthday of this beautiful nation. Enjoy it,” first lady Melania Trump said.

The event partnered with America250, the bipartisan effort preparing to commemorate the United States’s semiquincentennial in 2026. America250 Chairwoman Rosie Rios said the Easter Egg Roll serves as an ideal entry point for families to connect with the country’s semiquincentennial celebration.

“We’re excited to be here for the second year in a row on the invitation of the first lady,” Rios said.

“She’s been a great champion of ours … this is a tradition, and obviously celebrating the 250th anniversary of our country is a great way to kind of lead up to that for July 4th, 2026,” Rios said to the Washington Examiner.

President Donald Trump joined Melania Trump as the event began, boasting that 40,000 eggs from U.S. farmers were used in this year’s festivities.

“As you know, just last year, they didn’t want me to order eggs for the Easter Egg Roll, the Easter egg hunt that we have here every year, they wanted me to use plastic,” the president said.

“I said, ‘I’m not using plastic. We’ll get it solved.’ And within a short period of time, eggs came down. They came down 40%, 50%, and by the time we got there, we had so many eggs, we didn’t know what to do with them. And today we have more than 40,000 eggs by all of the great egg farmers that are with us.”

Alongside the traditional egg roll and egg hunt, this year’s event included a sensory-friendly egg hunt, with real eggs provided by the American Egg Board. A wide range of interactive exhibits and activities spanned the South Lawn, reflecting partnerships across government and the private sector.

“Think about these kids — they probably don’t learn cursive anymore,” Rios said to the Washington Examiner. “So for them to sit down and think through what our founding fathers had to go through with their quill pens, it’s actually really exciting to see.”

As families left the South Lawn, they also received a commemorative egg from the official 2026 White House Easter Egg Set. The event was also supported by roughly 500 volunteers.

Looking ahead, Rios highlighted plans for a first-of-its-kind nationwide celebration.

“On July 4, that is America’s block party,” she said. “We’re doing a synchronized block party … across the 50 states, D.C., and the five territories.”

The organization is rolling out a range of family-focused initiatives aimed at engaging communities across the country.

“We have hit the ground running,” she said. “If you didn’t know us at the Super Bowl, you probably saw us at the Artemis launch.”

As families explored exhibits, participated in activities, and rolled eggs across the lawn, Rios said the energy of the event stood out.

“We’re already fans of Trump because [my daughter] is born on Trump’s birthday. We’re from Florida and we just, we wanted to come and celebrate with him on Easter and be very American on the 250th anniversary,” an attendee said.

As the country approaches its semiquincentennial, organizers hope moments like the Easter Egg Roll will serve as a gateway for Americans — especially young people — to engage with the nation’s history and its future.
