President Donald Trump said on Thursday that the United States has “more corrupt elections” than some third-world nations.

Trump made the remarks during an Oval Office event when expressing his frustration with Senate Republicans for not passing the SAVE America Act.

“We have more corrupt elections than third-world countries have, and we ought to get smart,” Trump said. “Pass the SAVE America Act, that’ll be a long way.”

Trump added that Democrats “didn’t want to pass” voter ID legislation because “they’ll never be elected again.”

The SAVE America Act would require an ID to cast a ballot and proof of citizenship to register to vote. The legislation passed the House last year but has stalled in the Senate because of the chamber’s 60-vote filibuster threshold. GOP lawmakers have repeatedly rebuffed Trump’s pressure to blow up the filibuster in order to push through the measure.

Trump repeated those calls on Thursday in the Oval Office, saying that Democrats would do so at the first opportunity provided.
